The ISRO-GBP has made its beginning as an outcome of Indian Middle Atmosphere Programme (IMAP) during the year 1990 with a concern all over due to increased Green House Gases (GHG's) and Ozone hole depletions over Antarctica. "The ISRO-GBP primarily addresses the issues concerned to parameters and processes responsible or potential for inflicting the climate change". Since then over a decade ISRO-GBP has organized itself for understanding the climate change related studies with the core strengths of ISRO and collaborating with the various other peer institutes in the country.
The programme utilizes the multi-platform observations involving satellite, balloon, aircraft and ground based studies for the parameter retrieval.
Presently the ISRO-GBP is structured to function on three broad themes viz: 1) Climate Change Modeling & Palaeo Climate. 2) Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosols. 3) Bio-geocycles and Land use change.
After the decadal experience and familiarity with the problem specific goals the ISRO-GBP programme office giving more thrust for defining the WHOLE and working towards understanding the issues relevant to climate change and Indian region more quantitatively.
