SCIENCE CHANNEL
A portion of EDUSAT capacity will be dedicated to science communication and it is presently called Science Channel. This channel will take a broad, holistic view of science including engineering and technology in the social context. It will have an ‘Indian Personality’. The initiation of this channel is a major step in realising the aims of 1958 Science Policy Resolution and Science and Technology Policy Statement of 2003 by Government of India. The objectives these policies are to reach the benefits from scientific knowledge and application to the people of India. Popularisation of science, enhancing public awareness of science, inculcating scientific temper and active participation of people are the other major objectives of the science policy.
The channel will aim at demystifying science. It will be simple without being simplistic, bring out the complexities but not be jargonised and it will be rooted in Indian cultural milieu without being revivalistic. It will provide scientifically authentic and accurate ‘information’ in a manner that is interesting and exciting. It will also have an inbuilt mechanism that would make interactivity possible between not only the channel and the audience but also among the various segments of the audience. A website of the channel is being designed as a tool for interactivity, information and other purposes. “Science is everywhere and for everyone” will be the guiding principle of the channel and will set for itself high standards of authenticity, research and production.
