In addition to the existing post graduate programme in “Soft Computing and Machine Learning”, a new M. Tech. programme on “Chemical Systems” has been introduced. Research in IIST is built on the foundations of various academic programmes run by the Departments of Aerospace, Avionics, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Humanities.
The Institute has faculty strength of 80; about 600 students from various parts of the country are pursuing undergraduate, post-graduate courses and doctoral programmes. IIST has been shifted to the new permanent campus on a picturesque site near Thiruvananthapuram.
IIST, Asia’s first Space University, has been established at Thiruvananthapuram during 2007 with the objective of offering high quality education in space science and technology to meet the demands of the Indian Space Programme. The institute offers Bachelors Degree in Space Technology with specialisation in Avionics and Aerospace Engineering and Integrated Masters Programme in Applied Sciences with special emphasis on space related subjects.
