Eleven 36 MHz equivalent C-band transponders on board ISRO's latest satellite INSAT-2E were handed over to INTELSAT on Tuesday, April 27, 1999 at a brief function held at Bangalore. Dr K Kasturirangan, Secretary, Department of Space, handed over a model of the satellite to Mr C Kullman, Director General INTELSAT to signal the handing over the Transponders. The transponders were handed over as per an agreement between the Department of Space (DOS) of the Government of India and the International Telecommunications Satellite Organisation (INTELSAT) signed in January 1995, DOS. The lease is for a period of ten years, with an option to extend by two more years. In turn, INTELSAT will provide lease charges periodically to DOS amounting to nearly US $ 10 million per year.
