Education and training in space science and technology is an integral part of the Indian Space Programme. Following are the major efforts by Department of Space (DOS) towards Human Resources Development in the area of space science and technology:
Towards capacity building, DOS has established an Institute, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) to meet the growing demands of the Indian Space Programme. The institute offers, Bachelors degree in Space Technology with specialisation in Avionics, Aerospace Engineering and Physical Sciences.
Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) is a premier institute with a mandate to build capacity in Remote Sensing and Geo-informatics and their applications through training, education and research programmes at postgraduate level. Formerly known as Indian Photo-Interpretation Institute (IPI) and founded in 1966, the Institute is first of its kind in entire South-East Asia. The Institute has enhanced its capability and evolved several training and education programmes that are tuned to meet the requirements of various stake-holders, ranging from fresh graduates to policy makers, including academia, industry and NGOs.
The training and education programmes of the Institute are designed to meet the requirements of various target groups, i.e. for professionals at working, middle and supervisory levels, fresh graduates, researchers, academics, and decision makers. The duration of courses ranges from one-week to two years. In addition to the regular training and education programmes, the Institute also conducts 'Distance Learning Programme' since 2007; which is unique in the country complementing the education programmes of the Indian universities.
IIRS has also conducts short and long-term courses and trained 800 professionals from various countries in the Asia-Pacific Region in its endeavor of providing technical support to CSSTEAP for all its RS and GIS training and education programmes.
Apart from these, National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS) supports conduct of multi-theme and multi-level training programme / awareness workshops by training personnel from different line departments, selected State Remote Sensing Application Centres and ISRO / DOS Centres. About 350 professionals / University faculty members / School teachers and students are being trained annually.
Towards, Long-term collaboration for Human Resources Development in the area of Remote Sensing and GIS on a regular basis, NNRMS has made arrangements with (i) Geological Survey of India training Institute, Hyderabad, (ii) National Water Academy, CWC, Pune, (iii) National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land use Planning, ICAR, Nagpur. These institutions regularly conducts training programme for the benefit of in-service professionals as well as researchers.
Realising the importance of Space technology, many Universities / Educational Institutions have started offering educational programmes in remote sensing & GIS / Geoinformatics, abiding the curricula standardized by NNRMS.
