Evaluation of Irrigation Tanks

Ministry of Water Resources (under Bharat Nirman Program) had initiated nationwide pilot scheme "National Project for Repair, Renovation and Restoration (NPRRR) of Water Bodies directly linked to Agriculture" covering about 1000 water bodies linked to agriculture in 24 districts and 14 states, for renovating these irrigation tanks to augment their storage capacities and to recover their lost irrigation potential. Monitoring of 732 tanks spread in 9 districts in 6 states (namely, Mahabub Nagar & Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh; Kabir Dham in Chattisgarh; Mandi in Hiachal Pradesh; Kupwara in Jammu & Kashmir; Gulbarga, Bangalore Rural in Karnataka and Ganjam & Gajapati in Orissa) to assess the impact of this scheme in terms of improvement in irrigation potential utilized during 2004-07 using satellite data is in progress. The study aims at inventory of water spread area of identified irrigation tanks, delineation of irrigation jurisdiction of these tanks, inventory of season-wise crop area and cropping pattern under each tank command area for two seasons of two years - before (2004-05) and after (2007-08) NPRRR scheme. Finally, the study will focus on characterization of irrigation utilization pattern for each tank command area. The project activity is in progress and scheduled to be completed by March 2009.
