Natural Resources Census

The Natural Resources (NR) census taken up as part Natural Resources Repository (NRR) is aimed to provide a snap-shot of the status of natural resources of the country. The project uses IRS data to prepare systematic spatial database of natural resources information such as land use/land cover, soil, geomorphology, vegetation, snow/glacier, land degradation, wetlands at 1:50,000 scale and land use/land cover both at 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scale for periodic monitoring of natural resources. Land use/land cover mapping at 1:250,000 scale has been completed successfully consequently for the fourth year (2007-2008) and accordingly the land use/land cover map of the country and interim report has been generated. The net sown area (NSA) during 2007-08 was found to be 139.72 mha comprising 43% of the total geographical area. The statistics are compared with 2006-07. It is found that NSA is marginally reduced from 140.24 mha to 139.72 mha with considerable increase in states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Mapping activity for land use/land cover at 1:50,000 scale has been completed for entire country except for some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh.
