National Wastelands Monitoring

At the behest of Department of Land Resources (DoLR) of Ministry of Rural Development, identification and inventorying of wastelands using satellite data on 1:50,000 scale was initiated in 1986 and completed in 2000 under 5 different phases. Consequent to the request from ministry, updation of these databases was initiated in 2003 with the use of one-time satellite data. In 2006 - 07, monitoring of the wasteland areas was taken up to enable identify areas of rapid changes, evaluation of the efficacy of implementation of various wasteland development schemes etc. During this exercise, instead of de-novo generation of wasteland databases, individual classes will be updated on the vector layer of 2003 based on image characteristics of multi-season Resourcesat data. The interpreted data will be archived as geo-database for easier and fast retrieval. The project is being executed along with various partner institutions and the work is nearing completion in 10 states.
