Watershed development

A project on Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of 77 sub-watersheds (854 micro-watersheds) in 5 districts under World Bank aided Karnataka Watershed Development Programme (KWDP) - known as Sujala Watershed Development Programme, taken up on behalf of Watershed Development Department, Govt. of Karnataka is making good progress. M&E of the project is carried out by concurrent monitoring in the form of MIS/GIS development, deployment and institutionalization and process monitoring through sample field verifications/ validations during project implementation. Impact assessment is a discrete monitoring method that is adopted using satellite data and ground data to study the impact on short term and long term basis. M&E units have been established in all the five study districts. Many open source software packages have been developed, installed and operationally being used for effective monitoring and evaluation process. M&E activities pertaining to Phase I & II watershed have been completed and taken up in Phase III watersheds. The detailed impact assessment of the developmental activities carried out has indicated measurable impacts in crop yield, crop diversity, house hold income, etc. This Project has been widely acclaimed by World Bank which has suggested replication of such Projects in various parts of the country and in other developing countries.
